report from live updates forum

17 July 2005

Hayden Allen is now out of hospital and living back at home. It was great to see him at the club prizegiving and it always amazes me to see how positive he is about the future. He can't wait for the beginning of the season.

report by David Crane (edited)

Mildenhall reached the sixty-point mark for the first time this season as they romped to their biggest and the league’s second biggest win of the season as Sittingbourne are left still searching for their first victory.

Mildenhall recorded nine 1-2 finishes in the 15 heats as the Crusaders produced just two heat advantages and two race winners in captain Andre Cross and impressive 17 year-old Mark Baseby, their combined haul of 20 points made up two thirds of the visitors total.

Andrew Bargh was very much in demand as he came in twice to replace James Purchase who failed the two minutes allowance and raced four times in five heats.

With Chris Johnson putting together his finest performance since joining with a paid 15 point maximum and Andrew Bargh and Jon Armstrong piling in with scorching paid 17 points each, Mark Thompson was looking for his first full maximum of the season.

But, after 3 straight wins, that bit the dust in heat 13 as he tried to look for the dirt around Bargh and Baseby and came to grief on the fourth turn.

He put it behind him, however, as he went on to win the last two races as the Fen Tigers finished with a flourish and should have boosted their league position by a couple of places at least.

Friday (22 July) they face an important and tough league match at Boston (King’s Lynn, 7.30pm) before returning to Mildenhall on Sunday 24 July in a highly-anticipated KO Cup quarter-final, 1st leg fixture against Oxford (5pm).

Gold Coast veterans day

report by Steve Magro

Mitch Shirra with his spoils

Stars of the past came together for the annual veterans day recently at Labrador, on Queensland's Gold Coast. The warm winters day was highlighted by quick laps from the incomparable Ivan Mauger, who - now well into his sixties - looked completely at ease as he consistently clocked times of 46 seconds aboard a laydown Jawa. It was amazing just to listen to his throttle control through the corners.

Mitch Shirra, a sprightly 45, also showed impressive style with an unbeaten run aboard his 2-valve Jawa (complete with chromed mudguard and banana seat!), his best time being 47 seconds. Enjoying the action were ex-riders Bill Bryden (Gold Coast club patron), John Titman, Nigel Boocock, Bert Kingston, Jack White, Bluey Scott, Bruce Croxon, Dave Booth, Kevin Beasley, Ted Nuttridge, Martin Porter and Scott Fisher. Ex-speedcar ace Howard Revell was also in attendance. During the interval, some were interviewed by Bob Leyden, sharing some of their better moments in the sport.

In the Open class, Scott Smith (who in 2004 rode for Newcastle in the Premier League) showed his usual exciting dash as he hung all over his bike, his best time on his home track being 45 seconds. He won the final easily from John Oliver, Hugh Stephens and Jon White.

Danny Regeling secured the Evolution 4-valve class trophy, with brother Steve being at his side in the pits. From Gladstone Steve Baker rode in two classes while Ken Karratt travelled up from Canberra to win the Sel Walton Trophy.

JAP fans were pleased to see former test match rider Kevin Torpie do speedy laps aboard the legendary British machine.

The sidecars also had the crowd on their toes with some typically close racing, three-abreast at times. The sounds of the barking engines surely brought memories flooding back for many throughout the day, while the schoolboys also raced on the inside track aboard their 125cc speedway bikes.

Later, I pressed Mauger about why he chose not ride a 2 valve Jawa - certainly, he hasn't ridden one for years. Although he said he possesses some such championship-winning machines, he hasn't had the time to properly prepare one for an on-track show. However, Mauger hinted that situation might well change, as he keenly observed an immaculate 1962 model Eso on display.

Also on display was a classic speedcar, the Johnny Stewart McGee Trackburner #1.
